A sand ceremony is a variation of the candle ceremony and is the visual symbolisation of joining of two or more people together by the blending of coloured sands. The act represents the joining of the individuals and the creation of a new union and family. 
This can also be incorporated into a baby naming ceremony or a wedding ceremony to signify and celebrate the joining together of all new family members.
